Giva Salutes: ServiceSpace

ServiceSpace

At Giva we search for organizations, large and small, that are doing a great job of changing the world around them for the better; and we are pleased to salute them here!

ServiceSpace, originally founded in 1999, is an online platform dedicated to helping people explore service. This online organization uses technology to create free inspiration hubs and websites for nonprofits and worthy causes. For example, ServiceSpace played an instrumental role in creating DailyGood, KarmaTube, and HelpOthers.

Its mission revolves around inner transformation and outer change, and the power of uniting people through compassion. The founder of ServiceSpace, Nipun, has received the Unsung Hero of Compassion award from the Dalai Lama.

Three principles guide ServiceSpace:

  • Be Volunteer Run: This organization is entirely volunteer-run. Instead of choosing to have five staff people working 40 hours per week, ServiceSpace opted for 40volunteers working for 5 hours a week. Dividing up the work, knowing that every volunteer's work is impactful and important, helps this organization succeed.
  • Serve Without Asking: ServiceSpace does not ask for donations because it believes the acceptance of a donation makes an implicit promise in the future that cannot be guaranteed. Its capital is entirely "Serendipity Capital."
  • Focus on Small Acts:: "There is no threshold of critical mass to reach before we accomplish our goal. Each step was the goal, each step was the reward." ServiceSpace never loses itself in future-based projections or promises. Small, free, collective. The little things in life are truly cherished at ServiceSpace, which helps people remember the good in every gesture and thoughtful message.
