Giva Intern Misha Carthen Selected for Prestigious Fellowship

Giva is very pleased to congratulate one of our former philanthropic writing interns, Misha Carthen, for being accepted into the prestigious Loewenstern Fellowship program at Rice University.

The Loewenstern Fellowship provides a yearlong experience for students to conduct service and civic research in parts of Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Through classroom and experiential learning, students engage with cultures, people, and problems different than their own and may acquire the skills, insight, and values that will enable them to become principled, civic-minded leaders in the 21st century.

Ms. Carthen was selected following a very tough, competitive and thorough application process. She will be serving the nonprofit preschool PREFER, based in Ruhengeri, Rwanda, for six weeks in the summer of 2016 teaching preschool classes, as well as an adult class with a curriculum of her own creation.

"Giva helped me uncover my passion for nonprofit trends and encouraged me to explore my specific interests in these fields, as well as their intersections. I imagine my career path and life outlook could have been quite different at this moment if it wasn't for Giva's kindness, encouragement, and guidance! A few months ago, I would have never imagined I would be serving a nonprofit internationally! It's a dream come true, and I am eternally grateful to my mentors such as my Giva internship supervisor for supporting me, for Rice University's generosity, and for the Center for Civic Leadership at Rice! The nonprofit PREFER is also wonderful for accepting international volunteers!" commented Ms. Carthen.

"This is what our intern program is all about. It is our pleasure and privilege to provide a platform and springboard from which our interns may learn, grow and explore their skills and talents. We are very excited for Misha and know her life will have positive, far reaching impacts on the lives of others," said Ron Avignone, founder of Giva.

Congratulations, Misha!
